Chippy´s Lament

His face no more than a grimace:
weather-beaten and lipless.
A sailor once, now only driftwood,
drifting along...

Eyes widened with distress -
saying something ´bout the arctic and shipwreck
and calling me ‚captain’ (he seems to have misread
my name-tag) - he whispers in my ear:

‚If you have come
to ask for forgiveness – there can be none.
Not with everything that you´ve done...’

His smile a tad malicious, he said:
‚You fooled all into thinking you´re gifted.
The great hero who brought everyone home!
But one...’

And calling on God as his whitness, he said:
‚I can still hear the ice crack near mid-ship,
like I can still hear the shout of the pistol
ring in my ears...’

‚So if you´ve come here to admit
you learned your lesson from what you did:
I can tell you ´bout a lesson you taught me, I’ll never forget:

‚You taught me what fear is.
It´s when all the seconds i count
only slowly and sadly nurture the hunch
she will never be found.

And you taught me despair is:
It´s when all those years passing by
only pause to remind she will not be here
on the day that i die.’

‚Now, can´t you see what you´ve done to me?
You brought me back, but i never returned.
And everytime I close my eyes I´m back
out in the cold, calling her name,
and seeing her traces vanish in the snow...’

‚So, yeah: you taught me what grief is.
It´s when my every bone
aches so hard i can´t breathe from
the sad certainty she will never come home.

And you taught me what dread is:
it´s when all of my skin
feels battered and bruised
from the horrible news that she´s lost in the wind.

But I’ll teach you what hate is:
it’s when not all your remorse,
not all the gold in the world could ever
cover my loss!

And I’ll teach you what revenge is:
It’s knowing the Father, the Son, the Holy Ghost
will try you for taking from me
everything that I loved the most!’

Peeking down on my filesheet,
the instruction #16 reads:
‚In case the patient acts wildly:
kindly remind him it wasn´t you.
Only on his hands
he will find smoke residue.’
